Aboriginal self-government
will not automatically make the lives of
Aboriginals better. It will allow Aboriginals,
however, to take greater responsibility
and control over issues affecting their
people and lands; to make choices about
how to use their resources to deliver programs
and services; to protect their cultures;
and to build partnerships in pursuit of
economic development.
It will lead to self-sufficient, self-reliant
Aboriginal communities that are better prepared
to participate in the overall economic growth
and development of Canada. And it will permit
Aboriginals to participate in framing their
future, something all Canadians are entitled
to.
