Out the Boundaries: Delivering DSL Beyond
the Central Office
Over the past several
years, service providers have been moving
aggressively to respond to the growing
demand for broadband connectivity, putting
in place the infrastructure to expand
digital subscriber line (DSL) coverage.
While many central
offices are now equipped to support DSL,
much of the subscriber base--primarily
those customers served from digital loop
carriers (DLCs)--remains unaddressed.
Establishing broadband
DLCs is a logical prerequisite to offering
mass-market DSL service to the entire
subscriber base, however the current central
office deployment model presents problems
when extended to remote terminals.
This paper examines
these obstacles, and presents an alternative:
an integrated linecard solution, combining
plain old telephone service (POTS) and
DSL, that is a simple and cost-effective
way to deploy DSL from first generation
DLCs.
