| At
the Canadian Medical Association, we believe
the federal government must take immediate
action to address four issues at the heart
of Canada's health care system: its ability
to deal with catastrophic illness or injury;
its long-term sustainability; its accessibility;
and its financing. Only the federal government
is in a position to provide the vital leadership
needed to respond to these critical issues.
The terrorist
attacks on the United States are tragic
proof that calamitous events can occur
on North American soil. Canada must have
a health care system equipped to deal
with a disaster of this scale.
In a recent national
opinion poll, however, more than one-half
of those Canadians surveyed believe our
current health care system is not prepared
to cope with a large-scale terrorist attack
or other disaster causing widespread injury
or illness.
